Its time to wire up the 12 Volt System inside my Electric Military Humvee.

We've accomplished a LOT on the Electric hummer, our electric motor and drive train are installed, and now its time to get the electrical working. Every electric vehicle has a 12 volt system. Just like a gas powered vehicle. The 12 volt system runs the headlights, windshield wiper motor, and all the accessories. Only the electric motor runs off of the super high 450 volt batteries.

Cool stuff. Slightly concerned about the wire shielding wearing down on the edges of the ABS though. Easy enough fix with a small grommet or just some RTV silicone.

i dont think the yellow wire is a allways on wire. relays have a NO and NC connection and the yellow wire is the NC wire so if there is no signal to the coil this wire will be connected to 12v the moment the coil gets a signal it will be disconnect from 12v.

I just wanted to konw out of curiosity, why bother using the car battery to run your 12V system if you're going to have a DC to DC converter supply 12V anyway? Can't you just eliminate the car battery all together? You could have the converter supply 12V directly to you BUS bar thus eliminating an unnessessary heavy component. Thanks for the awesome content!

Relays are more commonly used to use a small "voltage" to power a larger voltage device by switching --relaying-- the higher voltage/amperage through the relay to the device.

Minor correction to the reason for using stranded wire. The phenomenon you described, paraphrasing here, “electricity runs on the outside of the wire,” is called the skin effect. This phenomenon only occurs in AC power systems, which makes sense for the AC generator. This phenomenon occurs when the alternating current creates Eddie’s within the electromagnetic field inside the conductors. These Eddie’s are caused because of the alternating current, basically clashing in to each other, resulting in the electricity wanting to run to the surface of the wire. I myself am not an expert in this but I thought it was interesting in my electrical theory classes, and I might have something mixed up in my explanation. Someone feel free to correct me. Also you are correct in using fine stranded wire to reduce the skin effect for you AC system.

One fix from Electrical engineer: Current flows through the whole copper when we are thinking of relatively low frequency. As the freq increases the current is pushed more on to the "skin" of the copper wire. This is called skin effect and it is related on to freq. On DC cables this effect is virtually nonexistent.

You will really want that always on for a stereo and a few other things. And you should have ran 2 much larger 12V batteries in parallels instead of just one little crap one. Should have made those bolts with the hose on them come through the other way and tack welded them on the other side and used wing nuts.

Skin effect in wires is only an AC phenomenon and it's only a significant issue at high frequencies; DC circuits are not affected. Large gauge wires are stranded purely for flexibility.

Your explanation of electricity flowing around the outside of a conductor is completely incorrect. A solid conductor is the absolute best way to get electricity from point A to point B. The only reason wires are stranded is for flexibility. That's why wires that are meant for static installations are often solid copper or have very few strands. I know a lot of people who work with electronics think this. But the physics of it is that electrons actually move through the copper atoms. That's why it's important to have very high purity copper. I think people who don't understand that electrons can actually flow freely through metal atoms are the ones who have made up this myth that electricity flows on the outside of a conductor.
Jimmy Merrild Krag
Jimmy Merrild Krag 2 أشهر قبل
17:26 Hope you figured out by now that electrons goes from negative to positive - not the other way around. If grounding to the frame is a real issue for you (I assume that will only happen if the positive battery terminal is somehow connected to it), you must place your fuses on the negative side.

Doing a great job. Just wondering if your melting those solder splices enough. When they are melted you shouldn't see a metal band anymore. The solder is ment to melt into the wires bonding them together. Without the solder band melted the center of the wires are not fused together, causing a hot spot and high spot of resistance. All in all, high resistance is less current and less voltage at the powered device. Also a fire hazard 🔥. Just don't want your project burning up a month after completion. Also, I'm a helicopter electrician so this is my life.

The thicker wire is just stranded because you wouldn't be able to bend it if it was 1 solid piece of copper. Electricity doesn't only run on the outside of the wire it'll run through the entire piece of copper thats why copper Busbars are also capable of carrying large amounts of current

Awesome Project. Can I give you something back. When drilling through your plastic sheet you can put a clear tube or hose over the drill leaving half inch of drill proud. It will act as a bump stop and give a good finish stopping the board jumping up. A HSS centre drill of varying sizes work great for rivet removal as the rivet head doesn’t get stuck on the drill bit. Sorry mate buuuut, glasses over the eyes work better than on top your head. Lol. Keep on keepen on. I really would like to do this to my 80 series Cruiser. Awesome approach, keep well. 🤟☮️😎👍

@JRE first of all, my name is Brian. I love your channel. I've been a follower for years now. I used to work and sometimes still do (ovcasionally) as am aftermarket automotive electronics installer. Things like radios, remote starts, new infotainment systems, headrest displays, heated and vented or even air-conditioned seats, the possibilities are now endless with aftermarket auto equipment within the last decade. I have years of experience, but I just want to say, you have made one of my most complicated things to learn about the trade I used to work, make sense to everybody. I've tried for years to explain to people how relays work but I always seem to wind up losing people through my explanations. Seriously. One of the easiest to understand in layman's terms, on how a relay works I've ever heard. I applaud your effort. Plus, I mean you'd prob do it yourself anyway, but if I was in your area (I currently live in Northern NJ in Bergen County less then 10 miles from manhattan) I'd do any of the aftermarket upgrades you'd want to your truck, but in your case, if you have any questions for me I will be glad to answer them for you. But so far you seem to have all the info and knowledge you need. It took me about 2 months to master that trade. I now work as a residential, commercial and industrial electrician working with 110, 220, 440, 600.... ect voltage systems either single phase or 3 phase power systems (just the difference in voltage the equipment is working with. Standard household is using single phase DUAL 110v leads and a neutral/ground. Where as three phase has a 4 wire setup with 3 wires that run at two of the different voltages I've named above, as well as a neutral). I look forward to continue watching this project, and I wish you good luck in the future. It gets monotonous and repetitive and boring but nonetheless. Good luck and be safe. Any questions, just message me. Sincerely, Brian D

This is coming out really cool and informative! Though, anybody else upset that he didn't really clean the Hummer before doing this process? All that dirt and sand still in that box where he's putting the electrical! I mean, after tearing off all the mechanical components, I would have tore out any of the carpeting and whatnot and just give the whole chassis a good power-wash at least. I'm assuming he wants to keep that military-used patina to the paint job, so I'm not gonna ask why he didn't sand-blast the whole chassis and body. But yeah.... clean that dirt up! hahha
